TALK: Curious Connections: Rational Function Extrema and the Geometric Mean

ABSTRACT: Rational functions of two quadratics in the form f(x)=[(x+a)(x+b)]/[(x+c)(x+d)] are explored. My collaborator, Larry Larson, discovered a curious connection between the extrema of the function and a geometric mean involving the function’s zeros and vertical asymptotes. The result is quite surprising! Together we have been exploring this relationship and are co-authoring a paper planned for publication later this year. I am pleased to present our major finding along with examples.
