Overview

The applications of exponential and logarithmic functions are extensive, but in this level course we concentration on basic applications. You are expected to attain an exposure to the applications mostly as a motivating factor to solving the exponential and logarithmic equations. We will work on more complicated applications in a precalculus course so here build a firm foundation.

Objectives

By the end of this topic you should know and be prepared to be tested on:

• 13.5.1 Understand that exponential and logarithmic functions can be used to model real-life applications
• 13.5.2 Given graphed data points visually determine if they would be best modeled using a linear, exponential, or logarithmic function
• 13.5.3 Be able to solve basic growth and decay application problems including "continuously compounded interest", "earthquake intensity", "population growth", and "carbon dating"

Define: exponential growth, exponential decay, half-life

Depending on the text there maybe some applications in this section that you can ignore in this level class. Definitely SKIP any "regression" and "regression analysis".

You should be able to look at graphed data and visually determine if it would be best modeled using a linear, exponential, or logarithmic function, but you do not have know how to find the specific function that would represent the data.
